Back out There
Wish me luck everyone. I just sent off a modified piece for Prime Time, a local newspaper for the senior set. (I sent a much longer version around this same time last year.) The theme for the November issue is Alzheimer's Awareness. My piece highlights the time I spent with my father who was by then, in his own words, "demented." He always joked about it- until he couldn't anymore. He became emotional and loving, even to total strangers. Once I got over the shock of seeing him fall apart watching King Kong, or blubber over a long distance commercial, I saw that I gained something from my time with him in his new state. It was hard to see my father reduced to some of the more unmentionable aspects of his deterioration, but it wasn't all bad.
While I know it was mostly awful for him, especially while he was aware of losing his faculties, our relationship ganied back the simplicity it had when I was a child, and for that I will always be grateful. I only hope my piece can get this across to the readers who may either be the demented, or caring for someone who is. There was a silver lining to the way my dad fell apart.

Good luck! I'm sure your piece is both meaningful and well-written. I hope to they choose it!
